First generation internet surveillance technologies
Making their appearance in 1996 when the number of websites was exploding, internet surveillance applications identified all modifications on a webpage, without any differentiation. The main disadvantage of such applications, based on "1st generation" technologies now considered run of the mill, is to alert the surveillance manager as soon as there is a change in date, advertising, headings or any other irrelevant items on the site.Such "noise" might be acceptable for one surveillance manager monitoring several dozen sites in a structured way, but it is extremely annoying when deploying the surveillance of thousands of different sources.
